Of the hundreds of cars he/we have there are probably only 20-30 that run reliably on the tracks due to their weight/shape. Those that run reliably can cruise the loops for dozens of turns before smashing into another at the intersection or flying off the track. Collisions happen less often that you'd think. My son is 3 and understands the concept perfectly, how to get the cars started, turn it on/off, etc. About three hours after setting up the toy, already one of the blue support legs snapped off. Four legs connect, one apiece to each of the four elevated loops with a weak plastic ball-type joint, it probably got kicked or stepped on, and snapped off at the ball. We wedged the leg back in and it seems to hold. The machine has run for several hours total on the first set of D-batteries showing no signs of slowing. The batteries drive a central spinning wheel that propels the cars along the loops. There's really not much more to it than that. We make a game out of ranking which vehicles run the most reliably, which win the 'crashing', etc. We also discuss why certain vehicles don't run on the track well (axels bent, heavy, etc.). Lighter vehicles can fly off the track and land 3-5 feet away so I wouldn't have my kids face right next to a track if possible, but we've had no injuries and don't expect any. Not much more to add.
